Warm weather brings out the bikes!

With the temperatures warming up and the sun staying in the sky longer, it is no wonder that the bicycle traffic around the area is picking up. It is great to see people using bicycles to commute, get exercise, or go for a family outing. Now is also the time to think about bicycle safety, both as a rider and a vehicle operator.

Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Association’s data, bicyclist deaths in 2007 accounted for two percent of all traffic fatalities during that year. Most bicyclist fatalities occurred in urban areas (72%) at non- intersection locations, and between the hours of 5pm and 9pm. In 2007, the average age of those killed in bicycle traffic crashes was 40 years old. Similar to other traffic crash data, more than one third of the bicyclist deaths involved alcohol by either the driver of a motor vehicle or the operator of the bicycle.

With all the facts and data behind us, let’s talk safety! Bicyclists, a properly fit bicycle helmet is the single most effective way to prevent head injuries resulting from a bicycle accident. You should also know that bicycles are considered vehicles. This means that the operator of a bicycle must comply with all rules that an operator of a motor vehicle must obey, including all traffic control signs, signals, and lane markings. Bicyclists are also required to ride in the same direction as traffic when riding in the street.

Wisconsin state statues require that bicycles operated during the hours of darkness have both a functioning front white light and a rear red light. It is also important to think about the clothing you are wearing and to wear colors that are more visible to drivers. Whenever possible, take advantage of bike trails or roads with less traffic. Take your time while crossing intersections and make sure vehicles acknowledge your presence. On your ride, if you decide to stop somewhere for a break, always lock up your bike!

Drivers of motor vehicles need to share the road with bicyclists. Be courteous and allow room while passing bicycles. Bicyclists are allowed to ride two abreast as long as they are not impeding traffic. Be careful when opening car doors if parked on the street as cyclists may be approaching from behind. Also, be extra cautious when making turns. Look carefully!

Bicyclists, you, too, must respect the motoring public. Be aware that you may not be visible to a motorist, depending where you may be. Using the many new bicycle lanes and trails in the area is also a great way to take advantage of safer travel routes.

The Chippewa Falls Police Department encourages all bicyclists to wear a helmet, make sure you can be seen, follow the rules and respect the rights of others.  Likewise, motorists are encouraged to be extra mindful of bicycle traffic and to safely share the road with their two-wheeled friends.  With care and some extra effort, lets make this bicycling season a safe one for all!
